High quality handmade Ukuleles, wooden tools and string instrument repairs.
ABOUT ME
I began my working life as a toolmaker with a small engineering firm back in the seventies.
Did a degree in 3d Design at Manchester polytechnic then a string of craft based jobs including cabinetmaking and furniture restoration.
UKULELES
Every ukulele here is entirely handcrafted by me. Apart from tuners, fretwire and strings all components are made in my workshop. Only quality seasoned tonewoods are used in the construction.
FINISHES
I favour a hand rubbed tung oil finish on my ukuleles. It's a hard and durable finish and easy to revive. The process involves
applying the oil with a fine abrasive paper, building up a slurry which is then rubbed into the grain. After several applications you're left with a smooth satin finish.
I'm currently looking into modern lacquer finishes so I can offer some more options.
AFTER CARE
A couple of things to avoid
Heat. The glues I use are thermoplastic ie they soften when heated. It's not a good idea to leave a ukulele in a car in direct sunlight or propped up against a hot radiator. Humidity. Extremely low humidity will cause shrinkage of the top and back and possible damage. If you're going to keep you're ukulele in a very dry environment I'd suggest using a humidity gauge and
humidifier. I build at 45-50% RH so that's what to aim for.
If you would like to commission a ukulele, have an instrument repaired or buy any of my products please contact me by email or telephone.
My workshop is open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. If you’d like to visit to try out a ukulele
let me know in advance to be sure I’m here
